Materials with a good properties profile and which are suitable for hot forging dies are:
Uddeholm Dievar Dievar is a high performance chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloyed hot work tool steel which offers a very good resistance to heat checking, gross cracking, hot wear and plastic deformation. Useful in forging block sizes up to 22 inches thick.
Uddeholm Hotvar A premium hot work die steel with very good high temperature properties. Can be hardened and tempered to 58 HRC giving an outstanding hot wear resistance. Use it for applications where hot wear and/or plastic deformation are the dominating failure mechanisms.
Uddeholm Orvar 2M/Bohler W302 Isodisc Orvar 2M and W302 Isodisc are conventionally produced AISI H13 with good high temperature strength and hot wear resistance. These grades are widely used for forging die applications.
Uddeholm Orvar Superior A premium Cr-Mo-V-alloyed hot work die steel (premium H13) with good high temperature strength, very good toughness/ductility and resistance to hot wear. Use in forging dies with sizes up to 18 inches thick.
Uddeholm QRO 90 Supreme A premium hot work die steel with very good strength and hardness at elevated temperatures. It also has good thermal conductivity.
Bohler W302 Isobloc W302 Isobloc is a high performance alloyed steel with a good gross cracking and heat checking resistance. It has good toughness and ductility in all directions. This material conforms to W. No. 1.2344 / AISI premium H13 / EN X40CrMoV5-1.
Bohler W303 Isodisc Hot work tool steel featuring high retention of hardness, good toughness and very good resistance to heat checking. Ideal for applications requiring better hot wear resistance and resistance to plastic deformation. Use in smaller block dimensions.
Bohler W360 Isobloc A remelted hot work tool steel with excellent toughness up to 58 HRC. Use in applications where hot wear resistance and resistance to plastic deformation are required. Best combination of ductility and hot wear properties in this higher hardness range.
Bohler W400 VMR A high performance low silicon containing premium H11 die steel with excellent resistance to gross cracking. Produced via Vacuum Arc Remelting, it is the toughest grade at 50-52 HRC. Use where cracking is a major issue in lieu of H13 type material.
