Material Recommendations

Materials with a good properties profile and which are suitable for die casting dies are:

A premium Cr-Mo-V-alloyed hot work die steel with good high temperature strength and excellent hardenability, toughness and ductility. It meets and exceeds the requirements of NADCA 207-2006 Grade C.  Suitable where cracking and some hot hardness are important in zinc, lead or tin die casting.  Good resistance to plastic deformation.

A premium hot work die steel with very good high temperature properties. Can be hardened and tempered to 58 HRC giving it an outstanding hot wear resistance. Use it for applications where hot wear and/or plastic deformation are the dominating failure mechanisms.

A premium Cr-Mo-V-alloyed hot work die steel (Premium H13) with good resistance to thermal fatigue. The steel is produced by a special melting and refining technique and meets the requirements of NADCA 207-2003, Superior Level, and NADCA 207-2006 Grade B.

W302 Isobloc is a high performance hot work tool steel with a good gross cracking and heat checking resistance. It has good toughness and ductility in all directions. This material conforms to W. No. 1.2344 / AISI premium H13 / EN X40CrMoV5-1;  the Premium Level of NADCA 207-2003 and NADCA 207-2006 Grade B.

A remelted hot work tool steel which can be heat treated to a maximum hardness level of 58 HRC. It is recommended for use in applications where toughness, hot wear resistance and/or resistance to plastic deformation is required.  One such application is zinc die casting, where hardness higher than 52 HRC may be needed.

Using Vacuum Arc Remelting Technology along with chemistry modifications to an H11 type alloy, this grade has excellent toughness and very good mechanical property uniformity.  Meeting the highest of toughness standards per NADCA 207-2006, Grade E, this grade is designed to be used for cavities and cores where cracking is the major issue, compared to an H13 tool.
