Material Recommendations

The proper tool steel selection for the application depends primarily on the work material type, strength, thickness, and part complexity. The most critical failure mechanisms for this application are adhesive wear, galling, chipping, and cracking.

Low alloyed, all-purpose cold work tool steel with very good machinability. It is suitable for short run tooling for a wide variety of cold work applications. As this is an oil-hardening grade it should only be used for smaller tools (wall thickness less than 50 mm).

A medium alloyed tool steel suitable for short and medium run tooling in applications where a very high chipping resistance and a hardness of 58-62HRC is needed. Caldie is suitable for surface treatments because of high temperature tempering. The property profile makes Caldie a robust cold work tool steel for heavy duty blanking and forming.

A high alloyed tool steel suitable for medium run tooling where good resistance to abrasive wear, adhesive wear and chipping resistance is needed. The 8% Cr steel has the ability to be surface treated because of high temperature tempering with achieved hardness of 56-63HRC. K340 is a good alternative to AISI D2 which is chipping / cracking.

A high alloyed powder metallurgical tool steel suitable for long run tooling in applications with high demands on adhesive wear and chipping resistance. Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean® is suitable for surface treatments because of high temperature tempering and is the best tool steel for long runs in applications with severe chipping problems. Vanadis 4 Extra is suitable for surface treatments because of high temperature tempering.

A high alloyed powder metallurgical tool steel suitable for long run tooling in applications with high demands on mixed wear (abrasive/ adhesive) or where risk of plastic deformation of the working surface of the tool is encountered. Vanadis 6 is suitable for surface treatments because of high temperature tempering.

A high alloyed powder metallurgical tool steel suitable for long run tooling in applications with high demands on mixed wear (abrasive/ adhesive) or where risk of plastic deformation of the working surface is encountered. Vanadis 6 is suitable for surface treatments because of high temperature tempering.

Uddeholm Vancron 40
A high alloyed powder metallurgical tool steel suitable for long run tooling in applications were adhesive wear and galling are the primary failure mechanism. Vancron 40 is developed to be used uncoated and is intended to replace surface treated tooling because of its excellent lubricity.

A medium alloyed tool steel suitable for short and medium run tooling in applications where superior chipping resistance is needed with a hardness range of 52-58HRC. W360 is suitable for surface treatments because of high temperature tempering. The property profile makes W360 a robust cold work tool steel for heavy duty blanking and forming where chipping and cracking are the major failures.
