What is the biggest difference between STAVAX®ESR from UDDEHOLM and other ESR material our competitors sell?

Simply stated, STAVAX®ESR is produced by Uddeholm and no one else. This allows us to supply to our customers quality material on a consistent basis. Many of our competitors are buying material on the open market from multiple sources; this results in a variation in the quality level of the material. For example poor heat treatment response, lack of polish ability, etc. STAVAX®ESR is produced exclusively by Uddeholm mills and the product is known throughout the mold building industry as a premium quality 420 type stainless.

Is 52-54 HRC too high of a hardness for STAVAX®ESR from UDDEHOLM (420, modified)?

It depends on two important factors. The size of the mold and its complexity. For relatively simple designs where there are not a lot of thick-to-thin wall transitions, sharp corners, etc. A hardness level of 50 to 52 HRC is acceptable. However, for complex designs or relatively large molds (e.g. thicker than 6 inches) a hardness level of 50-52 HRC may be risky. If in doubt on the selection of the hardness level please contact our technical department. With a copy of the blue print and a discussion of the design with the mold builder, we can provide a more detailed answer.
